Olot is a municipality located within a natural environment that makes in an exceptional place. The city is built upon a plain surrounded by mountains, traversed by the River Fluvià and beside the banks of the Riudaura gully stream. The area stands out for its rolling landscape and volcanic matter, which are the result - among other things - of its four volcanoes: Montolivet, Montsacopa, Garrinada and Bisaroques.
Olot is the capital of the Volcanic Zone of La Garrotxa, and the very best exponent of volcanic landscape on the whole of the Spanish peninsula. It boasts some 40 volcanic cones and over 20 lava flows. The Natural Park of the Volcanic Zone of La Garrotxa is made up of eleven municipalities - Olot being the main one of these - and covers an area of some 15,000 hectares. Its orography, soil and climate have given rise to a varied, often exuberant flora, and exceptional landscapes which includes holm-oak, common oak and beech forests.
La Fageda d’en Jordà forest is one of the most popular places to visit in Olot - a flat terrain covered by exceptional beech trees that rise above a lava flow from El Croscat volcano. Its mounds, which can reach over 20 metres in height, are one of the most singular features of this unique forest.
Olot also boasts other places of natural interest, such as Parc Nou, whose splendid grounds boast the Torre Castanys - a Modernista (Catalan Modernism) building, a botanical garden with a spectacular common oak wooded area that is listed as a monumental grove, and a garden containing medicinal plants from la Garrotxa area. The Pedra Tosca park, the via verda (greenway) of the former railway track that connected Olot to Girona, and Olot city’s El Firalet are just a few examples of the locality’s close relationship with nature.
