Cultural life is ever-present in Olot, a town brimming with tangible and intangible cultural heritage. Ancestral traditions and their accompanying network of associations have given rise to one of the most prominent cultural corps in the whole of Catalonia.
Headed by Olot City Council, these institutions are fiercely committed to cultural promotion, and in offering events spanning all domains and formats, the city has become a benchmark for the areas that make up the entire Girona province. The MOT literary festival and Sismògraf festival are just two of the city’s most notable offerings.
One of Olot’s greatest assets is its wealth of artworks and sculptures - something which is usually only to be found in large capitals. The Olot School of Drawing has produced some of the leading names in Catalan art, and has also served as a driving force for promoting the city’s artistic culture. It also remarkable how the city has managed to keep hold of such significant works as La Carga (The Charge) by Ramon Casas, or El Greco’s oil painting Christ Embracing the Cross.
Olot, however, does not only thrive on bygone times: it is constantly striving to establish itself as a cultural benchmark for both the present and future alike. The town supports local artists and cultural innovation, and is committed to fostering the cross-cutting nature of artistic disciplines and genres, as well as promoting coordination between the general public, the private sector and associations. This makes for a dynamic city in constant pursuit of excellence.
The province of Girona has become the land of festivals, and Olot contributes with the SISMÒGRAF festival in Spring and the MOT festival from March-April.
