27 places of interest in la Garrotxa A OLOT

Villages of the Bas Valley

Vall d’en Bas is an large municipality located to the south of la Garrotxa. The whole town forms a geographical and landscape unit, with its great plain in the foreground, and the Transversal mountain range in the background.

Scattered throughout the plain, one of the most fertile in Catalonia, are seven villages  with a very unique charm, two of which are listed as historical-artistic sets: the town of Mallol, located on a hill, which, for centuries was the administrative capital of the Viscount of Bas; and the town of Hostalets d’en Bas, which has its origins in hostels located at the foot of the old royal road that went from Olot to Vic, and which today is one of the most traditional images of La Garottxa .

Currently, Sant Esteve d’en Bas is the administrative capital of the valley. A visit the church is a must, which is noteworthy for its columns and story-filled capitals.

At the foot of the Puigsacalm, Joanetes is an authentic nativity scene village where, during the Christmas holidays, a  highly successful living nativity scene is displayed. The most remarkable building is its church, consecrated to St Romànus, and documented in the 12th century.

Puigpardines is possibly the smallest and quietest towns of all. Located under a spur full of oaks, oaks and beech trees, the church of Santa Maria de Puigpardines stands out. It used to be a monastery, which still preserves the old Romanesque portal.

La Pinya is the town located to the north of the valley. The parish church of Santa Maria dating back to the 10th century stands out and, outside, the public clothes washing basins, the only ones in the valley and some of the few that remain in la Garrotxa.

Finally, we find Sant Privat d’en Bas, a small town made up of a square surrounded by the church along with a small group of houses. The square is accessed through an arcade, forming a unique and beautiful complex.
