The Sant Joan les Fonts Monastery dates back to the year 958 and was dedicated to St John the Baptist.
From the 11th to the 15th century, it came under the St Victor of Marseilles Abbey, then later fell under the domain of the Sant Pere de Besalú Monastery until 1592, when it became part of the Sant Pere de Camprodon Monastery until the 19th century.
During the earthquakes of the 15th century the cloister and the old buildings of the monastic complex were severely damaged, so much so that, in time, they were demolished, except for the church, which is the only building of the monastery that has lasted down to our day.
The church is in the Romanesque style with a rectangular, basilica floor plan, made up of three naves, one central and two lateral ones. Noteworthy are the grand apse and the two absidioles on each side of the central apse, one of which was demolished in the 18th century. From the interior, the decoration of the capitals, the 12th-century baptismal font and the various works of art exhibited on the side naves, which includes a replica of the Monastery’s Christ in Majesty.
In 1982, it was declared a Site of National Cultural Interest by the Catalan Government.
