Croscat Volcano Natural Reserve

Croscat Volcano Museum Space

The clay quarry area of the Croscat volcano was restored in 1995, in order to restore the ruined area, minimise the impact on the landscape, prevent erosion and enable public access with a educational objective.

The Natural Park Information Centre at Can Passavent, at the entrance to the clay quarries, with an exhibition on the Croscat volcano. Information Centre opening times: every day, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Volcanic cone completely covered with vegetation except for the clay quarries, a former mining zone with a cut that allows us to see the internal structure of the volcano. The impact produced by the mining led to public protests (1975) and the subsequent protection of the volcanic zone (1982).

The restoration of the quarries won a FAD award for decorative arts design.

Access: Walking route No. 15, Clay Quarries of the Croscat Volcano (2.9 km, 50 minutes), departing from the Santa Margarida car park, Ctra d’Olot to Santa Pau, (km 6.1), on the right. Also route No. 1, Fageda d’en Jordà - Santa Margarida Volcano - Croscat Volcano (11 km, 4 hours), can be accessed from Can Serra (Fageda d’en Jordà) on a 5-km route, 1 hour and 40 minutes (there and back). Access by motor vehicle is prohibited.

The Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park gives authorisation to access by vehicle up to the Can Passavent Information Centre, after providing verification of the degree of disability. Authorisations must be requested in advance by sending an e-mail to cps@tosca.cat with a minimum of 24 hours’ notice.

Organised groups (community centres, travel agencies, companies, etc.): According to the special regulations, organised groups can only access the Natural Park accompanied by one of its authorised guides and by booking the visit in advance by e-mail to cps@tosca.cat. Most tour guide companies have professionals with this qualification.
